Fake Names “Expendables” (2023)

I went to a concert the other night by a favorite band of mine who will remain nameless. It was bad time music of the highest order, the crowd miserable, hanging on every ear splitting note. Everyone except me as I was lost in my own head, arrested by the deadly melodies on Fake Names’ Expendables. I mean I wasn’t even listening to it, I was remembering it. And the howls & thud of the music was getting in my way. I couldn’t wait to kick rocks & blast Targets.
The term supergroup makes me want to vomit because it is usually supershit. But when the planets align as in the case of Fake Names (Brian Baker, Dennis Lyxzén, Johnny Temple, Michael Hampton & Brendan Canty), it is worth all prior shakedowns.
The know-how these legends bring to the table is massive & they don’t waste one second fucking around. The hooks are painful in their effectiveness. These songs are so great that you wonder how the hell they haven’t been written yet.
The sounds Baker conjures from his achingly tasteful guitar collection are what you have been waiting for your entire life. I mean your entire goddamned life, make no mistake. Lyxzén’s vocals are startling; his soulful swagger is unmatched in its originality & ferocity. As silly as it may sound, these songs make you feel better. My blackened heart goes out to all involved, including the spot-fucking-on production from Adam “Atom” Greenspan. That man has dangerous knowledge & you should take note of anything he is involved with.
Check out Targets, Go & Caught In Between to hear for yourself. Fingers crossed they do this again in the future. Do something really cool & buy a copy for a friend. Out NOW on @epitaphrecords
